FNB Innovator: Ray Griggs

FilmNewsBriefs talked to filmmaker Ray Griggs about his new film “I Want Your Money” and some of the challenges in bringing his controversial yet relevant film to life.

FilmNewsBriefs: When did you come up with the premise for “I Want Your Money”?
Ray Griggs: Shortly after Obama took office and wanted to pass the $757 Billion stimulus bill.

FNB: Was there a strong sense of urgency with the project?
RG: Yes, because I know it takes time to make a film and it needed to be done before the 2010 mid-term election. Additionally, I know that everyday our government is spending an estimated $2,912,000,000.00.

FNB: Why do you feel you are the right person to tell this story?
RG: Because I am not a politician or an economist, I am just your average Joe. I think more average citizens should get involved in politics to take back control of our government.

FNB: Can you discuss the mix of animation and “real” footage?
RG: As a traditional Hollywood filmmaker, I wanted to make a documentary that is both entertaining and enlightening while still conveying an important message.

FNB: How did this help your story telling?
RG: By using animation, we were able to explain controversial issues in simple and humorous terms.

FNB: What were some of the biggest challenges in making this film?
RG: We ran into what we like to call as La Resistance … ha ha! Due to the film’s right wing message, we had obstacles hiring people, obtaining footage, getting distribution, etc.

FNB: What’s your biggest hope for this project?
RG: To encourage the public to read our Constitution and take back our government. Regardless of being left or right, our government’s spending is out of control. We are fiscally hemorrhaging and we need to do something about it.

FNB: Will there be a follow up to this film and the audiences reaction?
RG: If Republicans don’t take back the house, I guarantee there will be a follow up film.
